The website www.achart.ca was created by the late Art Cockerill, an old boy who attended the school in the 1940’s and during his lifetime recorded a host of information about its history.

Art also wrote a book entitled “The Charity of Mars” – A history of the Royal Military Asylum (1803-1892) covering the period up to when the school became the Duke of York’s Royal Military School. This and other books by Art may be obtained via his website.

In addition to the above, two articles have been written by W.J. (Bill) Rogers, another old boy, who attended the school in the 1940’s (Saunton/Dover 42-47). The first of these is “Dukies of Yesteryear” containing information about the school between 1798 and 1950. The second is entitled “When the Bugle Calls” which is an account of his time at the school and his subsequent military career, typical of many Dukie’s of his era. Both the above can be accessed by selecting this link

Other books of interest include:

A history of the school from 1801 to 1934 by Lewis Rudd.

A history of the school from 1801 to 1986 entitled “Play Up Dukies” by George Shorter.

Both books were privately printed but copies may be available from specialist booksellers.

The following is a link to school records available from the National Archives which includes the names of boys admitted to the school:
